Christopher Ward

Christopher Ward is one of those rare watch brands where the founding story genuinely explains everything about how the brand behaves today. It started on a boat trip down the Thames in May 2004, when co-founders Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Chris Ward, three friends with successful retail careers and a shared frustration at the opaque pricing of the Swiss watch industry, decided to do something about it. Their plan was disarmingly simple: build Swiss-made watches of genuine quality, apply a maximum three times markup on manufacturing cost, sell exclusively online, and skip the celebrity endorsements entirely. On June 2nd 2005, they launched from a converted chicken shed in Berkshire, and the watch industry has not quite been the same since.

The super impressive part about Christopher Ward is that the underdog spirit of that Thames afternoon never really left. In 2014, the brand merged with their Swiss manufacturing partner Synergies Horlogères in Biel and announced Calibre SH21, the first commercially viable in-house mechanical movement from a British watch brand in over fifty years, a genuinely astonishing achievement for a brand barely a decade old. The momentum has only continued from there. In 2023, the Bel Canto, a chiming watch of real horological ambition, earned the Petite Aiguille at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, one of the most respected accolades in the industry. T3 named them Brand of the Year in 2024, and they claimed British Watch Brand of the Year for a third consecutive time at the 2025 WatchPro Awards. For a brand born in a chicken shed, that is quite the arc (time well spent, one might say). Today Christopher Ward spans collections from the iconic C60 Trident diver to refined dress pieces and motorsport chronographs, all made in Switzerland, all priced with the same honest conviction that started everything back in 2004.
