AWAKE Watches

AWAKE is one of those rare independent watchmaking brands where the name says everything. Founded in 2019 by French entrepreneur Lilian Thibault, the brand operates with a singular purpose: to use the watch as a vehicle for awakening its wearer to the beauty and fragility of the world around them. This is not a philosophy tacked onto a product for marketing purposes. It is the structural foundation of every decision Thibault makes, from the recycled steel in the cases to the ancestral Métiers d’Art techniques sourced from their countries of origin. Within just a few years of its founding, AWAKE designed the official watch gifted to world leaders at the G7 summit in Biarritz, completed a genuinely unprecedented NASA collaboration featuring a live NFC connection to the International Space Station embedded directly into the sapphire crystal, and became the only independent brand to win the Watch of the Year award in 2023, standing alongside Cartier, Rolex, and Omega in the nominations.

What strikes me most about AWAKE is the coherence. Every element of every watch points back to the same set of convictions. The Son Mai collection, launched in 2024 as the brand’s first permanent Swiss Made line, is perhaps the clearest expression of that coherence: Vietnamese lacquer artistry applied by master craftspeople in Hanoi, Swiss movement engineering from La Joux-Perret, French leather craft from Franche-Comté, and pure silver leaf worked into the dial by hand across more than ten hours of focused labour per piece. AWAKE does not just draw inspiration from the world; it brings the world’s craft traditions into direct, tangible contact within the object you wear on your wrist. That is a rare thing, and it is very much worth paying attention to.
